Nosotros tomamos el autobús a Tijuana y luego un vuelo a la Cuidad de Uruapan, que se encuentra a 15 minutos de San Juan Nuevo." - "We are at the bus station in Bakersfield on our way to San Juan Nuevo. My brother was tired and bored. We took the bus to Tijuana and then flew to the City of Urupan, which is about 15 minutes from San Juan Nuevo."

Description supplied by photographer: "Durante nuestra visita a San Juan Nuevo viajamos al Volcán de Paricutin. Mi hermano Junior y mi prima Martha Aguilar están parados en la boca del volcán. Se puede ver por las manchas negras como la lava destruyó a nuestro pueblo en 1943." - "We traveled to the Paricutin volcano during our visit to San Juan Nuevo. My brother Junior and my cousin Martha Aguilar are standing on the rim of the [dormant] volcano. You can see by the dark patches how far the lava spread across our town when it was destroyed by the volcano."

Nos reunimos con nuestra familia casi cada fin de semana y durante esta reunion celebramos el cumpelaños de mi papá. Las corundas son tamales preparados con chile y queso y se envuelven en hojas. Es una comida típica y tradicional de San Juan Nuevo." Translation of description: "My mother Leonor is making corundas in my backyard in Templeton. We have large family gatherings with my dads brothers and our family almost every weekend. We were celebrating my dads birthday. His name is José. Metafóricamente hablando representa un lado de mi vida en San Juan Nuevo y del otro, mi vida en los Estado Unidos. Cuando paso por el túnel para ir a la escuala no veo muchos alumnos Mexicanos y no se escucha hablar en español. Me siento como una persona ajena que no pertenece en este lugar. Cuando atravesamos por el túnel hacia la escuela, hay muy pocos estudiantes mexicanos y no muchos de ellos hablan nuestro lenguaje. Tenemos que poner atención a la ropa que usamos porque los otros estudiantes y los maestros pueden pensar que somos una pandilla. Tenemos que poner atención a lo que decimos o en que lenguaje hablamos, sobre todo cuando dialogamos en español cuando estamos próximos a ellos porque pueden pensar que hablamos mal de ellos. Cuando salimos de la escuela y regresamos por el túnel a casa, nos sentimos libres y cómodos y rodeados de familia y amigos quienes entienden nuestra cultura y lenguaje." - "This is the tunnel that leads to my school in Templeton. It is a metaphor for my life since one side represents San Juan Nuevo and the other side represents my life here in the United States. When I go through the tunnel to get to school there are very few Mexican students and not many students speak our language [Spanish]. I feel trapped. At school I have to watch what I wear because the other students and teachers will think that I am in a gang. I have to watch what I say or how I speak in Spanish around them because they will think that I am talking about them in a negative way. When I get out of school and go back through the tunnel to go home, I feel free and comfortable because I am around family and friends who understand my culture and language".

Bailan una o dos canciones y cuando lo hacen las chicas de todas edades gritan y apoyan a Los Curpites de su respectivo barrio. Este és uno de los eventos culturales más grande que se realiza en San Juan Nuevo donde llegan muchas personas de distintos lugares." Translation of description: "The Curpite dancers from barrio San Mateo compete against those from barrio San Miguel. While they dance, girls of all ages cheer to support the dancers. It is one of the biggest cultural events held in San Juan Nuevo. People come from places many places to see the dancers compete."

Despues de la ceremonia en la iglesia todos vuelven a la recepción para celebrar el cumpleaños con su familia y amigos. Allí la muchacha baila con su papá y recibe la última muñeca que ella recibirá antes de hacerse mujer." - "This is my friend Scarlett Maria Ruiz at her [q]uinceaera in San Juan Nuevo. A [q]uinceaera is a Mexican celebration of when a girl turns 15 years old. The church is called the Sanctuary for the Lord of Miracles, which is dedicated to our patron saint in San Juan Nuevo. After the celebration at the church they went to the reception to celebrate with family and friends. At the party the girl dances with her dad. The girls parents gave her a doll. It is the last doll that she will receive before entering womanhood."
