Skip to Content Search Cal Poly News News C a li fo r ni a P o lyt e c hni c S t a te Uni ve r s i ty May 19, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Robert Detweiler (805) 756-2186 Cal Poly Among 'Top 100' in Nation in Awarding Degrees to Hispanic Students SAN LUIS OBISPO -- For the fifth consecutive year, Cal Poly has been named as one of the "Top 100" universities in the nation when it comes to awarding degrees to Hispanic students. Cal Poly was named to the list in the May issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine. The magazine compiles its annual list based on information from the National Center for Education Statistics. Cal Poly was among 18 California State University campuses named to this year's 'Top 100' list for awarding the most degrees to Hispanic students. Cal Poly ranked No. 49. "We're pleased that Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education has recognized Cal Poly, but the recognition should go to our Hispanic students," said Interim Provost Robert Detweiler. "We are committed to offering a high-quality education to all of our students, and to helping all of our students go on to succeed in industry and in working for California." Cal Poly is currently among the top universities in the nation in awarding undergraduate degrees in agriculture to Hispanic students. Among Cal Poly's many clubs are several Hispanic cultural and instructional clubs, including the award-winning Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers The SHPE chapter this year earned first place in a national design competition -- for the third consecutive year. In 2004, Cal Poly's Society of Women Engineers partnered with the Cal Poly Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers to present bilingual engineering workshops at Pacheco Elementary school in San Luis Obispo -- a program that also earned a national award. Among Cal Poly's many other active student clubs are the Hispanic Business Student Association, Latinos in Agriculture, La Comision Estudiantil, and MEXA (Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan). The university also offers a full range of programming through its Multicultural Center.
