California Polytechnic State University May 18, 2004 To: Cal Poly Community (Faculty, Staff, Emeritus, Students) From: Craig Schultz, Director ITS User Support Services Information Technology Services RE: Cal Poly Modem Pool Transition: Special Offers for Campus Internet Users As Cal Poly prepares to decommission the campus modem pool effective July 12, 2004, Information Technology Services (ITS) and Contract and Procurement Services have successfully negotiated with local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide Cal Poly-centric alternatives. These include the most competitive pricing, support services, and special offers for dial-up, cable, DSL and wireless Internet connections. These special offers (“value bundles”) are designed specifically for Cal Poly faculty, emeritus, staff, and students, and are available to employees of auxiliaries such as ASI and Foundation. Cal Poly alumni are also eligible for several of the ISP offerings. Information about these “value bundles” is available to authenticated campus users only, via the MyCalPoly Portal. For details, visit http://uss.calpoly.edu and click on the link to “Cal Poly Modem Pool Transitions: Internet Service Provider 'Value Bundles' (Current Info).” All ISPs listed on the portal met an eight-point screening process to ensure best value, services, personalized support, and terms/conditions. For assistance in accessing the Cal Poly Portal, contact the ITS Service Desk at 756-7000. The same website includes a link -- “Cal Poly Modem Pool Transitions: Roadmap to Internet Service Providers (Current Info)” -- with general information, including FAQs, criteria for selecting an appropriate ISP, and descriptions and prices for other available dial-up and broadband services. Individuals still using the Cal Poly Modem Pool will be contacted shortly to facilitate a smooth migration prior to cessation of the campus service on July 12, 2004. After the transition, faculty, staff, emeritus and students who currently use the campus modem pool to connect to the Internet and Cal Poly resources (e.g., e-mail, calendar, Robert E. Kennedy Library, Blackboard, etc.) will still be able to access these services, but it will be through an off-campus ISP. ITS will continue to update the campus on this issue through the Academic Senate, Cal Poly Labor Council, various campus committees, LAN Coordinators, and appropriate campus Web sites and publications. The ITS-User Support Services Web site referenced above includes a “Suggestion Box” for feedback. We welcome your suggestions to assist the campus community with Cal Poly Modem Pool service transitions, and will continue to post updates to the Web site. For more information or additional assistance, please contact the ITS Service Desk at 756-7000, Building 14, Room 114.
