Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University Sept. 30, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: LISA WOSKE (805) 756-7110 Taiko Drummers from Japan To Play The PAC SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA -- With a concert that comes "from the ancient capital to the world," the YAMATO taiko drummers come to the Christopher Cohan Center on Sunday, October 19, 2003 at 7 p.m. Cal Poly Arts presents the 11-member Japanese ensemble as part of the new 2003/04 performing arts season. "Everything a stretched skin can manage, from the delicate patter of drops of rain to hammered-out rolling thunder." (The London Times) Founded by Masaki Ogawa in 1993, Yamato is based in Nara, a city where the Japanese culture is believed to have started. "Yamato" was the ancient name of Japan and of Nara and represents a period of intense cultural activity within the country's history. The Wadaiko drum is an instrument believed to have long existed in many parts of the world. Although it's a very simple drum, it is said to have the potential to penetrate the very core of its audience because, according to Yamato, "We invest our hearts. It is the sound of our heartbeat that the audience feels through the drumming." The six men and five women of Yamato have perfected a body coordination and group unity that makes the drum a spiritual, as well as musical instrument. Their high-energy, heart-felt shows have won fans and critical acclaim around the globe. During the last ten years, Yamato has given more than 800 concerts worldwide, performing in Western Europe, Scandinavia, Israel, Brazil, as well as in China, Korea and Indonesia. This is Yamato's second tour to the United States, labeled the "Tamashy" Tour (tamashy meaning "soul"). Tickets for the performance range from $26 - $38, with student discounts available, and may be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office. Ticket Office hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The order by phone, call (805) 756-2787; to order by fax: (805) 756-6088. Order on-line at www.pacslo.org.
