"Design Build Project Delivery" is being offered July 24 and 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. "Seamless Teams," which will discuss the collaborative process of design-build will be held Saturday, July 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Classes will be lead by Barbara J. Jackson, Ph.D., DBIA. The design-build method is the integration of the design and construction processes. The design builder forges a single contract with the owner to provide both design and construction services, which makes it distinctly different than the traditional design-bid-build method. The cost for "Design-Build Project Delivery" is $225, which includes lunch and 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The cost for "Seamless Teams" is $100 if taken with "Design Build" or $125 if taken without "Design Build." This course includes lunch, breaks and 0.9 CEU. Since 1982, the design-build method for contracting has grown from $6 billion to $56 billion, and is now the preferred project delivery method for approximately 33 percent of U.S. construction. "Contractors have found that the Design-Build method is 33 percent faster and 6 percent less in unit cost, superior in product quality, and generates less than half the claims and litigation," said Jackson. In "Design Build," class discussion will cover why owners are requesting design-build and the design-build structural and process variations. Other topics discussed will include the integrated design and construction project controls, managing the design process, performance specifications and evaluation and project delivery and success factors. In "Seamless Teams" participants will learn what seamless teams look like, how they function, and how they operate. Participants will also acquire techniques and practices to achieve high performance, such as continuous debrief, radiant thinking, non-linear innovation, marginal practices and the collaborative process. Barbara J. Jackson holds a B.S. in Housing and Design, a Masters in Construction Management, and a Ph.D. in Education and Human Resources with a specialization in Technology of Industry from Colorado State University. Jackson spent 20 years in the construction industry working as a project estimator and senior 1 of 2 9/25/2009 11:12 AM file:///X:/Copyright/Submissions/_PressReleases%20&%20Cal%20Pol... project manager, and then, as President and Owner of Design-Build Services Inc. in Virginia from 1984-1995. She is now an Associate Professor of Construction Management in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. and the Director of the California Center for Construction Education. Jackson received a Design-Build Distinguished Leadership Award in 2000 and then again in 2001 from the Design-Build Institute of America. In 2002, Jackson was honored with the Design-Build ProfessionalT designation by the Design-Build Institute of America. She is currently conducting two research projects regarding design-build education and is Chair of the Interdisciplinary and Communication sub-committee of the Design-Build Institute of America's Education Committee. She also provides professional consulting services and training to the construction and design industry.
