Hilton Foundation Makes Second Award to Cal Poly's Aryan I. Roest Memorial Scholarship SAN LUIS OBISPO - The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation has awarded the California Polytechnic State University Foundation a second annual payment of $25,000 toward a grant of $100,000 for the Aryan I. Roest Memorial Scholarship. "Professor Aryan Roest touched the lives of many young people during his 40-year career in the Biological Sciences Department," said Phil Bailey, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. Roest was instrumental in establishing a degree in ecology and systematic biology and a graduate program in biological sciences, as well as the college's vertebrate animal collections and natural history museum. His work included extensive studies of the Pacific Coast sea otter and the Sierra Nevada red fox. The scholarship, established by Roest's friends, former students and family members, honors his many contributions to Cal Poly. The endowment will provide funds for graduate students who are studying areas of biology related to the study of native species, their habitats, and the environment. "We hope the endowment will reach $200,000 to enable a student to receive full support for his or her graduate studies at Cal Poly," said Bailey. For more information on the scholarship or making a tax-deductible contribution, contact Cary Bowdich, director of advancement for the College of Science and Mathematics, at (805) 756-5713 or by e-mail at cbowdich@calpoly.edu. -30CP Home • CP Find It Get Adobe Reader • Microsoft Viewers Events • Recent Releases • Cal Poly Magazine • Cal Poly Update E-newsletter • Contact Public Affairs • Alumni • Giving • Athletics Cal Poly Public Affairs California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 805.756.7266 polynews@calpoly.edu 9/25/2009 11:16 AM
