Jimenez-Flores received the national award during the American Dairy Science Association's 2003 Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz., in June. In making the award, the ADSA commended Jimenez-Flores for the "quantity and quality" of his classroom teaching during his 13 years as a university professor, as well as his coaching university dairy products judging teams and his mentoring of senior undergraduate students and their research projects. Jimenez-Flores has also supervised more than 30 graduate students during his years of teaching, been invited to make numerous international presentations on dairy science, and offered "tremendous service" to the American Dairy Science Association, chairing several committees, the organization noted. "Professor Jimenez certainly deserves this honor. His enthusiasm and knowledge of his subject material are appreciated by his students. He works hard to remain current in the latest technologies," said Cal Poly Dairy Science Department Head and Professor Les Ferreira. Before joining the Cal Poly Dairy Science faculty eight years ago, Jimenez-Flores taught at the University of Illinois, where he coached the Dairy Products Judging Team for five years. Also during the ADSA conference in Phoenix, Cal Poly Dairy Science Professor Ed Jaster was elected National Advisor to the Student Affiliate Division of ADSA. Ferreira said Jaster will serve dairy science students well in the advisor's position. "Professor Jaster is an effective classroom instructor who has been recognized on numerous occasions for his teaching skills and his ability to motivate students," Ferreira said. Cal Poly has one of the largest undergraduate dairy science programs in the United States and is the only West Coast university to offer a specific dairy science major. Its modern facilities, equipped with some of the latest technology, provide a high level of support for Cal Poly's "learn by doing" philosophy. The Dairy Science Department offers $30,000 a year in scholarships, in addition to university and college scholarships.
