The fruit tasting will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Crops Unit, Building 17, at the corner of Highland Drive and Bishop Road on the campus. Parking is also free; permits are not required on Saturdays. The event is co-sponsored by the California Rare Fruit Growers, the Horticulture and Crop Science Department and the Crops Club at Cal Poly, and will include fruit from the Dave Wilson Nursery. Fruit available for sampling will include peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and cherries, including several newly developed varieties not officially named yet, according to event organizer and retired Cal Poly Professor Joe Sabol. This is the second year that the fruit tasting has been held at Cal Poly. This year's event will include four tasting stations to make tasting easier. "Last year we had more than 600 people turn out," said Sabol. Members of the California Rare Fruit Growers and the Cal Poly Crops Club will be assisting with the tasting event. The Dave Wilson Nursery is a major producer of fruit trees for home planting as well as for commercial fruit producers. The nursery, located in the town of Hickman, near Modesto, holds fruit tastings annually throughout the state. The fruit samples for the June 21 Cal Poly tasting will come from the company's San Joaquin Valley nurseries, but many of the tree varieties that produce the fruit will thrive on 9/25/2009 11:49 AM Cal Poly Holds Free Fruit Tasting June 21 2 of 2 file:///X:/Copyright/Submissions/_PressReleases%20&%20Cal%20Pol... the Central Coast, Sabol said. The nursery will not be selling fruit trees at the tasting, but those interested in trees can visit the nursery's Web site at: http://www.davewilson.com/. -30- CP Home • CP Find It Get Adobe Reader • Microsoft Viewers Events • Recent Releases • Cal Poly Magazine • Cal Poly Update E-newsletter • Contact Public Affairs • Alumni • Giving • Athletics Cal Poly Public Affairs California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 805.756.7266 polynews@calpoly.edu 9/25/2009 11:49 AM
