Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University March 5, 2003 Contact: Teresa Hendrix (805) 756-7266 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Cal Poly Hosts 10th Annual Al Smith Day April 13 at Swanton Pacific Ranch Near Santa Cruz SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly's College of Agriculture is hosting the 10th Annual Al Smith Day April 13 at its Swanton Pacific Ranch near Santa Cruz. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers train rides, tours of the ranch's railroad roundhouse and car barn, ranch tours, and a barbecue lunch. The 3,200-acre ranch was bequeathed to Cal Poly in 1993 by alumnus Al Smith, founder of the Orchard Supply Hardware chain. The entire ranch serves as a working lab for Cal Poly agriculture students. Tickets to the event include the Santa Maria-style barbecue lunch and train rides. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children 8 years old or younger if made before April 4. After April 4, reservations will be $25 for adults and $15 for children 8 and younger. Cost is $48 per person for those wishing to take a chartered Silverado Stages bus from San Luis Obispo to Swanton Pacific Ranch and back (includes lunch and train rides at the ranch). The event is open to the public, and university alumni and friends are invited. For details and reservations contact E.J.
