The concert, also billed as “An Evening of Musical Masterpieces,” will feature Cal Poly student cello player Kristin Harris performing Hungarian composer Frigyes Hidas’ “Fantasy for Cello and Wind Ensemble.” Harris is principal cellist in the Cal Poly Symphony. “The Wind Ensemble will perform several wind band musical masterpieces that will add additional inspiration and excitement,” Johnson said. These selections include “J. S. Dances” by Donald Grantham, “Bacchanale” by Rolf Rudin, “Molly on the Shore” by Percy Grainger, and “In a Cause Called Glorious” by Stephen Melillo. “Both ensembles enjoy a national as well as international reputation for musical excellence,” Johnson said. “Every year the ensembles perform several major concerts on campus and at other universities, high schools and community civic auditoriums.” The Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble have performed at conferences of the College Band Directors National Association, the California Music Educators Association and the Western States Collegiate Wind Band Festival. This winter, the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble will represent California at a Western region conference of the College Band Directors National Association to be held in Reno. Cal Poly was one of four California wind groups invited to participate. In spring 2003, the orchestra made its debut performance in Carnegie Hall as one of two "showcase ensembles" at the first New York Wind Band Festival. Tickets to the Pops Concert are $9 to $19 and can be bought at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Tickets can be ordered by phone at 756-ARTS (756-2787). The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts, Music Department and Associated Students Inc.
