Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University Feb. 12, 2003 Contact: Jo Ann Lloyd (805) 756-1511 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 'Color of Policy' Lecture Series To Continue Feb. 27 With a Talk on Criminalization of Black People SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly's Color of Policy lecture series will continue on Feb. 27 with a talk by social activist Theryn Kigvamasud'Vashti titled "A Brief History on the Criminalization of Black People, the War on Drugs and the Assault on Black Women's Reproductive Health." The free public talk will be at 7 p.m. in Philips Hall in the Christopher Cohan Center at Cal Poly. The presentation is part of a Black History Month series that examines ways in which various federal, state and local policies harm communities of color. According to Kigvamasud'Vashti, prisons exploit poor people and people of color. She will discuss her view about how the U.S. war on drugs has its roots in race, criminalization and a mass assault on black women's reproductive autonomy. Kigvamasud'Vashti has been working for social change for nearly 10 years. She has trained at the Center for Third World Organizing and has served on the steering committee for the Seattle-Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. Currently, she is a steering committee member of the African-American Task Force Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. She also serves on the Northwest AIDS Foundation African-American Task Force Advisory Committee. The lecture is sponsored by Cal Poly's Ethnic Studies Department and Women's Studies Program.
