Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University Jan. 31, 2003 Contact: Bob Anderson (805) 756-1511 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 'Human Rights Dimension' Of Iraq, U.S. Mideast Policy To Be Topic Feb. 10 SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Washington director for the Middle East and North Africa division of Human Rights Watch will talk Feb. 10 at Cal Poly on "Iraq and U.S. Policy in the Middle East: The Human Rights Dimension." Joe Stork will speak at 6 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium in the University Union. The program is part of a series of lectures on the crisis in the Middle East, sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and History Department and part of a history course taught by Professor Manzar Foroohar. Human Rights Watch is an independent human rights monitoring organization based in New York and Washington, D.C. Before joining the organization, Stork co-founded the Middle East Research & Information Project and from 1971 to 1995 was the chief editor of Middle East Report, its bimonthly magazine. His articles on Middle East developments also appeared in The Nation, the Middle East Journal, World Policy Journal, Le Monde Diplomatique, Collier's Encyclopedia, the Oxford Companion to World Politics and other journals and books. His most recent books include "Erased in a Moment: Suicide Bombing Attacks Against Israeli Civilians" and "Routine Abuse, Routine Denial: Civil Rights and the Political Crisis in Bahrain," both published by Human Rights Watch. Additional forums in the series will be Feb. 17 on Israeli-Palestinian relations, Feb. 24 on the "Axis of Evil" and the "Holy Alliance," and March 10 on dissent and the U.S. Constitution. All presentations are free and open to the public.
