Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University Jan. 30, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: LISA WOSKE (805) 756-7110 Cal Poly Arts Brings Flamenco Company to Clark Center Feb. 18 SAN LUIS OBISPO - Voted Guitar Magazine's "Best Flamenco Guitarist of the Year" for five consecutive years, famed master musician Paco Peña and his Flamenco Dance Company perform at the Clark Center on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at 8 p.m. The New York Times declared Peña to be ".a genuine virtuoso, capable of dazzling an audience with technical abilities beyond the frets of mortal man." Cal Poly Arts presents the Company's Central Coast debut in conjunction with the Clark Center Association. Peña will appear with a company of five dancers, two guitarists, and a singer. Paco Peña embodies both authenticity and innovation in flamenco. As guitarist, composer, dramatist, producer, and artistic mentor, he has transformed perceptions of this archetypal Spanish art form and made it accessible to audiences. Since 1970, Paco Peña has performed regularly with his own hand-picked company of dancers, guitarists, and singers in a succession of groundbreaking shows. As Peña says, "I want to present a young company of artists with all their exuberance and their optimistic approach to what they are doing right now with Flamenco. I am excited by their fresh approach... and the way they feel about Flamenco. This fits in very well with the whole idea of this particular show, which emphasizes ensemble as well as solo dances, highlighting not only the dramatic, but also the fun aspects of the art". The Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company has taken flamenco into the realm of music-theatre with regular seasons in London and festival appearances in Edinburgh, Adelaide, Amsterdam, Athens, Israel, Istanbul, Singapore 10/2/2009 2:18 PM Cal Poly Arts Brings Flamenco Company to Clark Center Feb. 18 2 of 2 file:///X:/Copyright/Submissions/_PressReleases%20&%20Cal%20Pol... and Hong Kong.
