Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University Contact: Jo Ann Lloyd (805) 756-1511 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Cal Poly Speaker Series To Address Copyright Issues SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Thomas Lebens, intellectual-property attorney with Sinsheimer, Schiebelhut & Baggett Inc., will speak on "Copyright and Digital Media" from 11 a.m. to noon Feb. 7 in Room 202 in the Kennedy Library at Cal Poly. Lebens will present a primer on copyright law pertaining to digital media and will outline the rights provided by law -- and some of the exceptions to those rights -- both statutory and case law. He will also discuss digital media, specifically MP3s and digital video, and issues relating to Napster and other peer-to-peer networks. Aspects of the Audio Home Recording Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act will also be explored. He will talk about unresolved issues and possible solutions. Lebens' talk is the first in a series on various copyright issues and is sponsored by the Kennedy Library's Intellectual Property Office and Training and Development Committee. Additional presentations, all to be in Room 202 in the library, will include: Feb. 13: Clark Turner of the university's Computer Science Department on "The Underpinnings of Copyright Law," 11 a.m.-noon; Feb. 20: Mary Shaffer and George Westland, Cal Poly's Information Technology Services department, "Responsible Use of Campus Computing Resources," 11 a.m.-noon; Feb. 27: Lynne Gamble, Kennedy Library, "Fair Use and the Library," 10-11 a.m. The public is invited to the free presentations.
