Dance Ensemble To Appear at Cal Poly Feb. 7 SAN LUIS OBISPO - Step Afrika!, a powerful collaborative project of young dancers from the United States and South Africa, will come to Cal Poly Feb. 7. The event, at 7:30 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium, brings together an ensemble of American dancers and members of the South Africa-based Soweto Dance Theatre who display "a high-energy brand of precision stepping." Also included in the group's repertoire are tap, South African dances, Zulu, gumboot, clogging, hip-hop, house and freestyle dancing Step Afrika! is a leader in arts education, specializing in the history, development and performance of "stepping." Instead of the traditional tap shoes, the dancers wear boots. "Their energy, physical strength and coordination were phenomenal," wrote Terri Goldman of The Review in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1996, Step Afrika! performs each year in North America, Europe and South Africa. The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Cal Poly's ASI Events.
