Skip to Content Cal Poly News Search Cal Poly News Go California Polytechnic State University Jan. 8, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: LISA WOSKE (805) 756-7110 Puppet Theatre Production Tells Tale of Perseus Jan. 24 at Cal Poly SAN LUIS OBISPO - Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre performs "The Adventures of Perseus" with a stunning combination of puppets, marionettes, and masked puppeteers on Friday, January 24, 2003 at 7 p.m. at the Christopher Cohan Center. Cal Poly Arts presents the popular Tears of Joy Theatre production as a special Family Series event. "The Adventures of Perseus" adapts the mythical tale of the young Greek hero, the boastful Perseus. Perseus sets off to find Medusa, whose hair is a mass of snakes and whose gaze can turn men into stone. With the aid of Greek gods, Perseus slays the evil Medusa and also aids the mighty Atlas and the princess Andromeda during his adventures. Cynthia McGean was commissioned by Tears of Joy Theatre to write "The Adventures of Perseus" as a play for the puppet stage. The production was directed by Nancy Aldrich, Artistic Director for Tears of Joy Theatre. Tears of Joy Theatre brings puppet artistry to audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad. Founded in 1971, the Theatre is recognized nationally for its commitment to excellence and innovation. Three of the Theatre's productions have received American puppetry's highest honor, the Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry -- an award established by the late Jim Henson. The Company's touring teams perform for over 250,000 children each year. Headquartered in Oregon, Tears of Joy Theatre is a resident company at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. This Cal Poly Arts Family Series show is presented with on-stage seating to enhance the theatrical intimacy. Tickets are general admission and seating is limited. Tickets for the performance are $15, with student/child discounts available, and may be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
