Fall 2009 Census Admissions Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo TOTAL APPLICATIONS Fall 1995 - Fall 2009 40,000 30,000 # of Applicants There were 37,999 total applications in Fall 2009, which is a decrease of 2.6% from last year. The number of total applications had increased from a low of 13,441 in Fall 1993 to a high of 39,026 in Fall 2008. Other New Post-Bacc/Grad 35,000 New Transfer First-Time Freshmen 25,000 Fall 2009 first-time freshmen (FTF) applications decreased by 1,863 (5.6%) from last year after climbing steadily since Fall 1993 to an all-time high in Fall 2008. This decrease is most likely due to the reduction of application fee waivers, limiting the number of campuses for which students can apply. 20,000 15,000 Fall 2009 new transfer applications have been up and down over the years. Of these 11,737 FTF accommodations, 33.3% enrolled, producing an entering FTF class of 3,908 students. After 10 years of declining yield, the Fall 2009 FTF yield of 33.3% is an increase over the 31.3% yield from the Fall 2008 FTF class. The College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences had the highest FTF accommodation rate (47.0%), as well as the highest FTF yield (53.3%). The College of Science and Math accommodated a high percentage of FTF (40.0%) but ended up enrolling only 23.1% of those selected. Conversely, the College of Architecture & Environmental Design only accommodated 21.6% of their FTF applicants but had 50.3% of their FTF accommodations enroll. Cal Poly accommodated 22.6% of Fall 2009 transfer applicants. Of the 1,174 new transfer accommodations, 61.0% enrolled, resulting in a Fall 2009 new transfer class of 716 students. As a result, comparisons to previous years are not possible. Among the changes is a new option for students to identify themselves in multiple races. Because of the new multi-racial category, we no longer aggregate students into a “non-white” category. The Fall 2009 FTF class had an average high school GPA of 3.81, an average SAT reading score of 579, and an average SAT math score of 623. Each of these averages is slightly higher than those of the Fall 2008 FTF class. Cal Poly exceeded its Fall 2009 new transfer target by 13.5%. The College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences enrolled the largest proportion of new transfers, with 23.9% of the 716 new transfers in Fall 2009.
