Description supplied by photographer: "Este es el túnel que conduce a mi escuela en Templeton. Metafóricamente hablando representa un lado de mi vida en San Juan Nuevo y del otro, mi vida en los Estado Unidos. Cuando paso por el túnel para ir a la escuala no veo muchos alumnos Mexicanos y no se escucha hablar en español. Me siento como una persona ajena que no pertenece en este lugar. Cuando atravesamos por el túnel hacia la escuela, hay muy pocos estudiantes mexicanos y no muchos de ellos hablan nuestro lenguaje. Tenemos que poner atención a la ropa que usamos porque los otros estudiantes y los maestros pueden pensar que somos una pandilla. Tenemos que poner atención a lo que decimos o en que lenguaje hablamos, sobre todo cuando dialogamos en español cuando estamos próximos a ellos porque pueden pensar que hablamos mal de ellos. Cuando salimos de la escuela y regresamos por el túnel a casa, nos sentimos libres y cómodos y rodeados de familia y amigos quienes entienden nuestra cultura y lenguaje." - "This is the tunnel that leads to my school in Templeton. It is a metaphor for my life since one side represents San Juan Nuevo and the other side represents my life here in the United States. When I go through the tunnel to get to school there are very few Mexican students and not many students speak our language [Spanish]. I feel trapped. At school I have to watch what I wear because the other students and teachers will think that I am in a gang. I have to watch what I say or how I speak in Spanish around them because they will think that I am talking about them in a negative way. When I get out of school and go back through the tunnel to go home, I feel free and comfortable because I am around family and friends who understand my culture and language".

Description supplied by photographer: "Los Curpites del Barrio San Mateo compiten con los del Barrio de San Miguel para ver cual cuadrilla baila major. Bailan una o dos canciones y cuando lo hacen las chicas de todas edades gritan y apoyan a Los Curpites de su respectivo barrio. Este és uno de los eventos culturales más grande que se realiza en San Juan Nuevo donde llegan muchas personas de distintos lugares." Translation of description: "The Curpite dancers from barrio San Mateo compete against those from barrio San Miguel. While they dance, girls of all ages cheer to support the dancers. It is one of the biggest cultural events held in San Juan Nuevo. People come from places many places to see the dancers compete."

Description supplied by photographer: "Este es mi amiga Scarlett Maria Ruiz y la foto es en la ceremonia de sus Quince años que se celebro en el Santuario del Señor de los Milagros en San Juan Nuevo. Despues de la ceremonia en la iglesia todos vuelven a la recepción para celebrar el cumpleaños con su familia y amigos. Allí la muchacha baila con su papá y recibe la última muñeca que ella recibirá antes de hacerse mujer." - "This is my friend Scarlett Maria Ruiz at her [q]uinceaera in San Juan Nuevo. A [q]uinceaera is a Mexican celebration of when a girl turns 15 years old. The church is called the Sanctuary for the Lord of Miracles, which is dedicated to our patron saint in San Juan Nuevo. After the celebration at the church they went to the reception to celebrate with family and friends. At the party the girl dances with her dad. The girls parents gave her a doll. It is the last doll that she will receive before entering womanhood."

Los videos son traídos a Los Estados Unidos para que de esta manera la gente pueda aprender de los acontecimientos en San Juan Nuevo." - "A cameraman is filming the Curpite dance competitions in San Juan Nuevo. They captured the special moments on video so we never have to forget who won or lost in the dance competitions. The videos are transported to the United States by San Juaneses who return to Paso Robles. The videos allow people [to] stay connected with the town in the in this way even if they did not have a chance to go to San Juan Nuevo."

Description supplied by photographer: "Un Curpite en frente de la casa de mi tía. Los niños aprenden esta danza desde chicos y a si se asegura que las tradiciones continuen de una generación a otra. Solamente los jovenes solteros pueden participar en La Danza De Los Curpites." - "A small Curpite dancer standing in front of my aunts house in San Juan Nuevo. Boys begin to learn to dance at an early age and the traditions are passed on from one generation to another. Only unmarried young men are permitted to dance."

Description supplied by photographer: "La tumba de mi abuelita Valentina Orosco Saucedo en San Juan Nuevo. Fuimos a llevarle flores y mi papá hermanos le estaban rezando. Ella murió en el año 2003." - "My [g]randma Valentina Orosco Saucedos [g]rave/ When we got to San Juan we visited her grave. We took her some flowers and cleaned her grave. My dad and brothers were praying to my grandma. She died in 2003."

Description supplied by photographer: "Una procesión para el Señor de Milagros merodeando por las calles de San Juan Nuevo. El Señor de Milagros es el santo patrón de San Juan Nuevo. Caminamos por aproximadamente tres horas, pausando cada hora y algunas personas mos ofrecían algo para beber. Al final orábamos. Tomé esta foto porque el evento es muy importante para la gente de San Juan y para mí." - "A procession in honor of the Lord of Miracles winding through the streets of San Juan Nuevo. The Lord of Miracles is the patron saint of San Juan Nuevo. We walked for about 3 hours and we stopped every hour and people would give us drinks. At the end we would pray. I took this photo because it was a very important event for the people of San Juan and me."
