Kennedy Library Update June 2014 Deeper access to the research you need: 250+ journals now available Using a data-driven evaluative process, Kennedy Library, with special one-time funds, purchased perpetual access to a large number of high-demand electronic journal back files. This means that faculty, students and other users can have access to all content for hundreds of scholarly journals. Our subscription plan allowed access to these journals from 1995 forward, but we discovered that Cal Poly users were attempting to access content from years prior to 1995. A total of 252 journals have been added to the Elsevier Science Direct platform. Read more. In June’s update, I’m pleased to share our good news about new online access to the back issues of high-use research journals. We also thank you for partnering on a great workshop to explore using open and affordable learning materials. For the library, the summer is a fertile time for renewal and planning. We look forward to offering even more ways for you and your students to connect with each other next fall. Have a great summer! Anna Gold University Librarian Kennedy Library On May 19 Kennedy Library held our first open textbook workshop for faculty, led by the University of Minnesota’s Open Textbook Library. Twenty-five faculty members (the maximum the workshop could accommodate) joined two guest presenters for a thoughtprovoking presentation and discussion about the current state of educational resources and the potential of the open textbook model for students, faculty, and administrators. The workshop was a huge success, and we look forward to facilitating future opportunities to continue this critical conversation around issues of equity, access, and affordability. If you are interested in exploring the adoption of open resources for your courses, or if you are simply curious about these materials, please contact Dana Ospina, Open Education Library Fellow at dospina@calpoly.edu. It’s time for Senior Projects We’re dedicated to supporting Cal Poly student success by making senior projects available in our online archive DigitalCommons@CalPoly. By participating, your students will have a digital record of their culminating work at Cal Poly and provide a way for your department to showcase exceptional scholarship. If senior projects have incorporated primary resources from Kennedy Library, Special Collections and Archives is eager to highlight those efforts. Please encourage your seniors to participate!
