In October, the Multicultural Center celebrates Latino Heritage Month. There will be movies, discussions, games, and spoken word poetry perfomances all relating to the rich Latino culture. We hope you’ll come to one or more of the events. Question of the Day (QOTD) Questions covering various topics concerning recent issues facing Latin America will be posted every Monday in the MultiCultural Center. You will be able to discuss your thoughts about the question on the following Thursday. Thursdays, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., University Union Room 217 Film: “Di Perjil” Di Perejil (Say Parsley) is a ?lm about the invisible children on the Haiti/ Dominican Republic border and the peoples ?ght for basic human rights. Tuesday, October 7, 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., University Union Room 216 Tamales y Tele Movie Night: “Chicano - Fighting for Political Power” This ?lm discusses the creation of La Raza Unida Party as a third party force for political power and the importance of political rights. It culminates in the 1972 election and the Raza Unida convention, and the fragmentation of the party at the height of its membership and recognition. Wednesday, October 8, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., University Union Room 221 Loteria (a.k.a. Mexican BINGO) Loteria is a Mexican game of chance, similar to Bingo, that uses images on a deck of cards instead of plain numbers on ping pong balls. You will be introduced to the history and meaning behind Loteria and have an opportunity to win awesome prizes. Tuesday, October 14, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., University Union Room 208 Night in El Salvador Students will learn about the current issues going on in El Salvador as well as its culture, traditions, history, and music. The evening will include Salvadorian music and food; a panel of Salvadorian students that will share their own experiences growing up in El Salvador. Hosted by Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. More than 25 cultural organizations will showcase their rich heritages with booths and displays. This year’s theme is “USS Culturefest: Sea of Diversity.” Visitors will enjoy music, dance, hands-on activities, entertainment/ performances, and food. The goal of Culturefest is to spread cultural awareness and promote cultural appreciation in San Luis Obispo County. his is a collaborative public festival organized by the Multicultural Center and student cultural clubs. More than 25 campus and community cultural organizations will showcase their rich heritages with booths and displays. Cyn Da’ Poet at ATOG Musician, author, poet... “I want to destroy language barriers; walls of diversity; I want to build communication bridges; we can be stronger if we unite; listen... I simply want to learn from you and.. inspire one person.. you.” C yn Da’ Poet knows she has found her calling. Born in El Salvador, Cyn and her family moved to Los Angeles when she was only one year old. Growing up in the LA area allowed her to surround herself with a diverse culture and community which helped nurture her natural talent as a writer and artist. She continues to develop as a spoken word artist, reaching out to people with poems that relate to issues many can connect to. She is currently working on her ?rst book, and is experimenting with incorporating music into her poems in hopes of developing a new genre. Cyn hopes to become the voice for those who have silenced their own, and there is no doubt that with the capacity of her words she will not only alleviate hearts, but also conquer them along the way. A nother Type of Groove is a spoken word poetry event held the ?rst Wednesday of each month throughout the school year and is intended to create open space for the interchange of ideas, beliefs, and personal expression. Each event features a highlighted poet as well as an open mic opportunity for interested students, faculty, and community members.
