Characteristics of Students Enrolled at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Fall 2012 Applications for Fall 2012 There were 45,796 total applications in Fall 2012, which is an increase of 10.9% from last year. Enrollment 6.2% from last year. The Fall 2012 FTF class quality continues to climb, with new recordhigh SAT and ACT averages. The average high school GPA is also a new record high. Fall 2012 first-time freshman (FTF) applications totaled 36,941, an increase of 3,940 (11.9%) from last year. In addition, Cal Poly has enrolled 13 National Hispanic Scholars and 7 National Merit ® Finalists. There were 3,591 early-decision applications for Fall 2012, of which 1,104 students were selected (30.7%) and 868 (78.6%) enrolled. New Enrolled First-Time Freshmen Fall 2012 new transfer applications increased to 7,529 from last year’s total of 6,834, an increase of 10.2% from last year. Of these students, 17,680 (94.7%) were undergraduates, 124 (0.7%) were post-baccalaureate students, and 875 (4.7%) were graduate students. The Fall total enrollment of 18,679 is a decrease of 0.4% (83 students) from Fall 2011. Fall 2012 total headcount enrollment exceeded Cal Poly’s internal headcount target of 18,584 by 95  students. Fall 2012 undergraduate headcount was 144 students over Cal Poly’s internal undergraduate headcount target of 17,536. Fall 2012 post-baccalaureate headcount was 2 students over its internal target, and graduate enrollment fell short of its target by 51 students. Cal Poly enrolled a new first-time freshman class of 3,701 students in Fall 2012, which was 2.9% under Cal Poly’s internal FTF target of 3,812. The Fall 2012 new transfer class of 796 students was 25.8% higher than Cal Poly’s internal new transfer target of 633. The average load for all students in Fall 2012 was 14.38, with undergraduates carrying a load of 14.52, post-baccalaureate students carrying a load of 14.68, and graduate students carrying 11.52. This total student average load of 14.38 is up from last year’s load of 14.21 and is just below a high of 14.39 in Fall 2009. Under-represented minorities (URM) include students who self-report their race/ethnicity as Hispanic, Native American, African American, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or multi-racial including at least one of those four groups. Cal Poly’s URM proportion of undergraduate enrollment for Fall 2012 is 17.2%, up from 16.2% last year. Note: As of Summer 2009, Cal Poly converted to the new federal standards for collecting and reporting ethnicity. Among the changes is a new option for students to identify themselves in multiple races. Of Fall 2012 post-baccalaureate students, 73.4% were female. However, at the graduate level, there were more men than women. Of Fall 2012 graduate students, 58.3% were male. Of the 18,762 total students enrolled in Fall 2011, 54.5% received some type of financial aid during 2011?12. Similarly, 53.7% of Fall 2011 undergraduates and 60.8% of Fall 2011 first-time freshmen received some form of financial aid in 2011-12. The amount of financial aid awarded in 2011-12 totaled over $136 million, an increase of 12.7% over 2010?11. Of the $136,432,822 total aid awarded, 68.2% came from federal funds, while 19.8% came from state funds and 6.3% came from institutional funds. Furthermore, 59.0% came in the form of loans, 31.5% in grants, and 6.4% came in the form of scholarships. Housing In Fall 2012, 36.5% of undergraduates lived in one of 28 dorms on campus. Almost all first-time freshmen (98.1%) lived on campus, even though Cal Poly does not require them to do so. In addition, 50.8% of Cal Poly sophomores lived on campus in Fall 2012. Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Fall 2012 Page 4 Degrees Awarded The 3,897 bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2011-12 is a 6.0% decrease from last year’s total of 4,146 bachelor’s degrees awarded. The number of master’s degrees awarded in 2011-12 (527) was the same number College Bachelor’s Master’s Credential awarded as 2010-11. The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts followed with 768 (19.7%) and 608 (15.6%) bachelor’s degrees awarded, respectively. Fields of Study Cal Poly offers 64 bachelor’s degree programs. The five with the highest enrollment for Fall 2012 are Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Agricultural Business, and Electrical Engineering. At the graduate level, Cal Poly offers 31 master’s degree programs. The six with the highest Fall 2012 enrollment (with ties for 2nd and 4th highest) are Education, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and City and Regional Planning. In addition to the degree programs, Cal Poly also offers a variety of minors and credential programs. Twelve bachelor’s and nine master’s programs are unique to Cal Poly among the California State University system campuses.
